Laphing Noodles 130g packaging — Chilli Garlic and Sichuan flavour broad noodles, available at Your Kathmandu

What is Laphing? Nepal's Favourite Street Noodle, Now in the UK

If you've ever wandered the bustling streets of Kathmandu, you'll know the irresistible pull of a steaming bowl of Laphing. Sold from roadside stalls and tucked-away eateries, this chewy, spicy noodle dish is one of Nepal's most iconic street foods — and now you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home.

What is Laphing?

Laphing (also spelled Laping or Laphing) is a traditional Tibetan-influenced noodle dish that has become deeply embedded in Nepali street food culture. Made from mung bean starch, the noodles are translucent, silky, and wonderfully chewy — quite unlike any wheat-based noodle you may have tried before.

The dish is typically served cold or at room temperature, dressed in a punchy combination of chilli oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, and spring onions. The result is a bold, tangy, spicy flavour that is utterly addictive.

A Street Food with Deep Roots

Laphing has its origins in Tibetan cuisine and was brought to Nepal by Tibetan communities who settled in the Kathmandu Valley. Over generations, it has been embraced and adapted by Nepali food culture, becoming a staple snack enjoyed by students, workers, and families alike — particularly in the cooler months when a warming bowl of spicy noodles hits just right.

Walk through Thamel, Boudha, or Patan and you'll find Laphing vendors doing a roaring trade, ladling out portions with practised ease. It's fast, affordable, and deeply satisfying — the ultimate street food.

How to Make Laphing at Home

Our Laphing Noodles 130g makes it easy to recreate this street-food classic at home. Here's how to prepare it:

  1. Remove the noodle sheet and seasoning packets from the packaging. Place the noodle sheet into a bowl and pour in 600ml of boiling water (above 90°C).
  2. Cover the bowl with a lid and rest the oil packet on top of the lid at the same time, allowing the heat to gently melt the oil ready for mixing.
  3. After 5 minutes, drain the water from the bowl. Add the seasoning packets according to your personal taste, stir well, and serve.

For an extra authentic touch, top with sliced spring onions, a drizzle of extra chilli oil, a splash of rice vinegar, and a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds.
